Omaha's version of Woodstock began Friday night at Borsheims with a Berkshire Hathaway shareholder-only cocktail reception, kicking off the Warren Buffett-fueled weekend.
Some people will do most anything to pay tribute to Buffett. "I thought it would be a lot bigger." First thing Californian Gem Sison wanted to do when he arrived in Omaha was to get a picture of Buffett's home near 55th and Farnam, the place he's lived in for a half-century.
From a lifestyle point of view, the physical therapist practices what “The Oracle of Omaha” preaches. "Frugality, just make your life more simple, just mind your pennies."
Dale Schwartz of Ohio wants to ask Buffett just one question. “What Warren reads daily and weekly. He reads all the time."
The keen observer and those who have been here before will notice that Warren got a new driveway this year. "I'm thinking with the new surface it will bring me better luck." You can say that if you're Darren Bornemeier from Milwaukee and you just puckered up to the pavement.
“That's my annual good luck charm for my good luck for investing." Has it helped? "No, but I'm banking on this year,” said Darren.
Jewelry giant Borsheims is the first official destination for the 40,000 shareholders. Three new signature cocktails were on the menu, Fortune Fizz, Profit Punch and Berkshire Brew.
While the standard souvenirs are available, Monopoly and Rubik's Cube, you can now get the Warren and Charlie Munger travel mug. Allis Peters of Ames, Iowa went with the piggy bank. “My little piggy-bank. Maybe I can now save some for retirement instead of spending it all."
At around 1 p.m. Sunday, for the first time ever, Buffet will be personally selling jewelry. Maybe he can sell this gem brought in just for the weekend, 60 carats with a $7.2 million price tag.
Buffett will answer shareholder questions on Saturday. Doors to the Qwest Center open at 7 a.m.
