OMAHA, Neb. --
Tens of thousands of Berkshire Hathaway investors came to Omaha from all over the world on Friday for the largest shareholder's meeting in the world.Organizers said they expected about 40,000 people to attend the event, which kicked off with a party at Borsheim's on Friday evening.
Officials at Eppley Airfield said there's so much out-of-town traffic for the event, that Lear jets outnumber commercial jets landing at the airport."We would love to have more acres, more concrete, and there could come a point where we would completely fill up," said Elliott Aviation General Manager John Mansfield. He said his company was expecting more than 100 arrivals on Friday, 15 times more than usual."They're arriving one after the other, and our challenge is to make sure they're in position, parked properly, and the guests that are arriving are all being given rental cars," Mansfield said. After leaving the airport, many of the investors will fill up Omaha hotels."From a hospitality side of it, our hotels are sold out," said Hilton Hotel General Manager Robert Watkins.
He said the Berkshire weekend attracts people from both the East and West coasts."This is my second trip to Omaha," said Beth Motschwiller of New York. "Last year I came, and I thought it was so much fun, I was very excited to come back. I love Omaha."In terms of numbers, the Berkshire weekend rivals the College World Series. Rather than watch baseball, these visitors are here to see the Oracle of Omaha and his empire."When we started, I thought we were coming out to see Warren, but I finally caught on," said Bill Lockwood of Dayton, Ohio. "I think we're coming out to go to Borsheim's."Lockwood said he's a huge Warren Buffett fan and has his entire retirement savings tied up in Berkshire Hathaway stock.
