Warren Buffett has been named the 14th most powerful person in the world in a new ranking released tonight by Forbes.

He comes just after General Electric Chairman & CEO Jeffrey Immelt (#13) and just before German Chancellor Angela Merkel (#15).

Buffett's friend Bill Gates gets bragging rights on this list, just as he does in the magazine's latest ranking of the world's richest billionaires. The Microsoft co-founder beats Buffett by four notches, coming in at number 10 on the power list.

It's the first time Forbes has compiled this particular list. It says it used four criteria:

  • "The number of people one influences"
  • "One's ability to project power beyond one's immediate sphere of influence"
  • "Control of or access to significant financial resources"
  • "How actively one wields power"

The magazine says its goal in compiling the list is to "expose power and not glorify it."

Who's number one? Barack Obama, the President of the United States.
