Stock-market champion Warren Buffett was identified this afternoon as a $2,400 donor to Houston Mayor Bill White’s U.S. Senate campaign in a note from White’s campaign otherwise touting his successes raising money online.
White spokeswoman Katy Bacon said Buffett also is poised to give again to White if there’s a special-election runoff.
Buffett, who hails from Nebraska, doesn’t show up on the Texas Ethics Commission Web site as a past donor to Texas candidates for state office, though he ponied up to Democratic presidential hopefuls Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama last year and to Democratic Senate candidates including Al Franken of Minnesota, according to research by the Center for Responsive Government.
Meantime, the political director for U.S. Rep. Ron Paul, R-Texas, told me there’s a 10 percent chance that Paul would join the field of aspirants for the Senate seat that Kay Bailey Hutchison has said she’ll quit by December.
Jesse Benton said Paul has “given it a little thought, but he is also very happy serving” his congressional constituents.
I’d inquired because there’s been speculation in political circles that Paul could make a strong—though not necessarily winning—run in the limited stump time available leading up to a special election.
In other Senate campaign news, state Sen. Florence Shapiro, R-Plano, let it be known this week she’s raised $1 million since airing her plans to explore a run for the U.S. Senate seat in July. Each candidate is required to update their financial reports the middle of this month.
Separately, former State Comptroller John Sharp, a Democrat, touted the endorsement of state Sen. Leticia Van de Putte, D-San Antonio. Of course, Van de Putte urged Austin Sen. Kirk Watson to run for governor earlier this year; Watson ultimately said thanks, but he’d be gunning for re-election next year instead.
I reminded Sharp adviser Kelly Fero of the Van de Putte-Watson episode. Watson “could have won if he’d run,” Fero replied. “Said so himself.”
Yes he did.
