ASSOC PRESS: Groups to split cash from Berkshire-owned company in bird deaths case

Associated Press - July 14, 2009 11:35 AM ET

SALT LAKE CITY (AP) - Wildlife nonprofits in four states will split nearly $1 million as part of a settlement with a power company after more than 200 eagles, hawks and other birds were electrocuted in Wyoming.

Portland, Ore.-based PacifiCorp agreed to pay $10.5 million after pleading guilty Friday in federal court in Wyoming to 34 violations of the Migratory Bird Treaty Act.

At least $9.1 million will go toward retrofitting utility poles to make them less dangerous to birds.

Five wildlife groups will share $900,000 for bird rehabilitation and research into power lines that are safe for birds.

The company also was ordered to pay a $510,000 fine.

PacifiCorp is owned by MidAmerican Energy Holdings Co., a unit of Warren Buffett's Omaha, Neb.-based Berkshire Hathaway Inc.

Something about that $900,000 reminds me of the old Vice-Admiralty court...
