Associated Press - May 15, 2009 3:55 PM ET ALEXANDER CITY, Ala. (AP) - Clothing manufacturer Fruit of the Loom has notified some of its workers in Alexander City that their jobs have been eliminated. John Shivel, a Fruit of the Loom executive, blamed the layoffs on the sour U.S. economy. But the company did not immediately say how many employees would be affected by Thursday's announcement. Alexander City Mayor Barbara Young confirmed that at least 80 workers received pink slips. Shivel says some of the people could be recalled if economic conditions improve. Fruit of the Loom is owned by Warren Buffett's Omaha, Neb.-based Berkshire Hathaway Inc. Information from: Outlook, http://www.alexcityoutlook.com
